was,were一般用于过去时,已经发生了的事,is,am用于正在发生或者正处于某状态.

例如:He(男) was a teacher,now,he is a policeman.

She(女)was a teacher,now,she is a policewoman.

but表示转折.they是"他们",you是"你(的),你们(的)"

i was sick,but i am good now.he was hungry,but he is full now.they were stupid,but they are smart now.you were angry,but you are happy now.she was crying,but she is smiling now.
