Zhoushan, the only city of islands in China, is located in the middle part of China coastline ( 121°31′--- 123°25′E and 29°32′ --- 32°04′N ). It is a central hub of sea transport of Shanghai and the Yangtze Delta Ecomomic Zone to the outside world.

Zhoushan has as many as 1390 islands with an area of 22,200 square kilometres, 1440 of which of a land area, with a population of 0.98 million. The main island, which is the fourth largest island in China, where the municipal government stands, covers an area of 502 square kilometres. It is the centre of economics, politics and culture of Zhoushan. It has a long history, which can be traced back to Neolithic Age, one the island lived and laboured man. Dinghai, where many historical relics has been discovered, such as ancient culture relics of the New Stone Age, the ruins of ancient battle field of the Opium War, has been named as a famous historical and cultural city by the provincial government.
