N: At the banks of a moonlit lake near the castle, our prince Siegfried was strolling along. When he saw a lovely white swan elegantly turn into a lady.
Ot: I’m terribly sorry. I don’t mean to startle you.
S: It’s all right. I mean, you didn’t startle me, not at all. I’m just wandering… Err… What’s your name?
Ot: Odette.
S: Odette. Where are you from? I mean, I haven’t seen you before, have I?
Ot: No.
S: Would you mind telling me…err…what…what makes you a swan?
Ot: I was once a princess. The sorceress Roth Bart kept me here by a spell which turns me into a swan when dawn breaks.
S: Perhaps… can I do something to help?
Ot: Unless someone swears eternal love to me.
S: I’m not one of those who can easily hide their emotion—I mean—If you don’t mind, come to the palace tomorrow night. I’ll hold a ball, especially for you, to declare my love. I’ll tell the whole country that you will be my wife.
Ot: I… I don’t know your name yet.
S: I’m Siegfried, the prince of the country.
Ol: Mum, the prince is going to marry Odette. R: I know, my pretty. I’ve already know that.
Ol: But he should be mine. You said you would make him mine, didn’t you, Mum!
R: Well, take it easy, my pretty. Look! How sweet my girl is! Just a little makeup and that will be perfect.
Ol: What do you mean, Mum?
R: You look almost the same as Odette, you see? Just go to the palace tomorrow. He will not be able to distinguish. Remember, you should be there before darkness falls when Odette turns back to a woman.
S: Oh, Odette. Here you are. I thought you were not coming.
Ol: I’m sorry to have kept you waiting for too long.
S: Never mind. It’s all right. I was just too eager to meet you.
Ol: I’m not Odette. I’m Odile.
S: Odile. Ah, yes, excuse me that I forgot your name. All I remember is your eyes, the sweetest eyes I’ve ever seen.
Ol: What were you thinking of?
S: Why do you ask me?
Ol: You were looking at me as though you loved me.
Ot: Prince Siegfried.
S: Of course. I love you.
