Good _________________, ladies and gentlemen. I’m Becky from 08IB3. Today, I’d like to talk about a well-known tragedy written by Shakespeare, Hamlet. The first time I heard about this story was at the age of 6. at that time, I didn’t even understand what revenge was. But I knew Hamlet was the young prince of Denmark who had a good sense of humor. His brilliant ideas attracted me a lot as well. This is why I love Hamlet so much. When I was in grade 9, I read it again. Suddenly, I understood Hamlet’s melancholy family situation and some of his crazy behavior. I began to sympathize with him. In my speech, I will discuss Hamlet’s struggle with thoughts of suicide and also his madness.
To be or not to be, that’s a question. Was life worth living for Hamlet? The answer was finally yes. Before the death of his father, he lived for studies and love, just like the students in the IB department. When his friend mentions his mother’s wedding to Claudius so soon after his father’s death, Hamlet got angry and said: ‘thrift, thrift, Horatio, the funeral bak’d meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables.’ After the ghost of Hamlet’s father told his son the truth about his murder, Hamlet lived for revenge. The revenge was not only for himself, but also for the whole country and divine justice. Claudius was really treacherous and was making everything awful. Hamlet needed to take revenge so that his life would be worth living. At last, he achieved his purpose but he also lost his life. Everything was over, the rest was silence.
In the play, a lot of people thought Hamlet was insane. However, Hamlet said that he pretended to be mad. Was Hamlet’s madness real or faked? In my opinion, his madness was faked. In this way, he could keep himself out of danger. Hamlet faced his father’s death bravely. He was conscious enough to stage the play which proved his uncle’s guilt. We could see that had a strong sense of justice. But why did people consider Hamlet to be mad? This is not only because of Hamlet’s wonderful performance, but also his anger, especially towards Ophelia.
The play teaches us that greed and ambition are the roots of evil. Claudius was so greedy that he caused the whole tragedy. We may straggle for what we want but not by villainous schemes. That is the only way to achieve success. So as we strive for our bright futures in our motherland and in foreign countries, let’s all remember the lessons of Hamlet.
That’s all my speech. Thank all of you for listening.原创的
