Candle in the wind 1997 is a song by Elton John as a tribute to Diana. It’s a remake of the 1973 version which was a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. On released in 1997, the song became a great success, becoming the first song in history to reach the top in each of the four major countries in the music industry: United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Japan.
Now let’s skip the specific background and go directly into the lyric.
I divide the whole poem into 4 parts: stanza 1 starts the lyric with a goodbye to Diana; stanza 2 to 4 tells her benevolence and immortal; stanza 5 to 6 expresses the sorrow for losing her; the last stanza is correlated with the beginning and again mourns for her.
Now let’s see the lines.
Goodbye England's rose, may you ever grow in our hearts. The first line, Diana is compared to “England’s rose”, which means she was in a very high position in people’s hearts, because rose is the national flower of England. You were the grace that placed itself, where lives were torn apart. Here grace means goodness or kindness. Altogether, this part presents us a princess who was kind to her citizens and loved by them.
In the second part, the author uses a personification “the stars spell out your name”, a simile “candle in the wind”, and other imageries like “greenest hills” to express the idea that though she was gone, her legend would always be remembered.
Loveliness we've lost. These empty days without your smile, this torch we'll always carry, for our nation's golden child. Loveliness refers to Diana, so does golden child. From these 4 lines we can see people’s sadness and lost. Then comes the next stanza: they try hard but could not fight back their tears, and the only thing they could do is cherish the sweet memories.

Diana, their leader of hope, a beautiful angel who once smiled and inspired them, left for good. The end of this poem is in fact endless, because their thought of missing her knows no bounds.
Finally I want to say something about the title. In Chinese culture, candle is usually attached to meanings like quietness, tininess, selflessness and hardworking, since it burns itself until death and gives off light for others. But here there’s something different: the author compares Diana to a candle not to show her tininess, but her bright light which encouraged people, and her compassion which warmed them. And it also indicates that although her life’s burnt out, her spirit never will.
