Nanaimo Torch Relay Community Celebration

Share the excitement of the Olympic Spirit in Nanaimo this October. Nanaimo is the second stop along the cross Canada Olympic Torch Relay. Be a part of this once in a lifetime community event on October 31st, to be held at Nanaimo's signature event site, Maffeo Sutton Park. Preparations are well underway for a lineup of entertainment that will build excitement and share the spirit of the games.

Organizers are hoping folks will make a night of it with their friends and families. Consider heading out for some early trick or treating in your neighborhood or at the malls and then come downtown for an evening meal and great entertainment. This is a family friendly event so bring the kids, dress them in a warm costume and share the spirit of the torch with them. Many of the final details of the event are still under wraps but here are some highlights to look for:

5:45-6:45pm Community entertainment acts on pavilion stage and on site 'trick or treating' at local community group kiosks on site, give aways and goodies from Coca- cola and RBC, and roaming entertainers

6:45pm-9:00pm- Main stage entertainment will include high energy acts sponsored by Olympic Torch Relay official sponsors, Coca-Cola and Royal Bank. Head lining local acts are just now being sign on. The final torch bearer will arrive at approximately 8pm and welcomed by CTV's Pamela Martin.

9:00pm- A fireworks display over the harbour to wrap up the show.

Things to keep in mind if you are planning on attending the event:

- There will be NO parking on site. It is estimated that there are going to be over 5,000 people making their way down to the park so plan ahead. Carpool, use public transit or walk.

- Food options on site will be limited so eat before you come, there are a lot of great dining options in the downtown core within walking distance of the event.

- Keep personal safety in mind, wear light colored clothes and arrange a meeting spot should your party get separated.
