What has drawn the most attention during the South Africa World Cup so far?Neither a player nor a team, but a plastic trumpet:the vuvuzela.
The vuvuzela is a iocal horn in South Africa.People use it to cheer on their teams during competitions. The horn is usually 0.91 meter long but can make a sound as loud as 140 dB which is louder than the noise of a plane when it takes off.
More than 1 million vuvuzelas have been sold since the World Cup opened on June11.But many people have complained about the noise, comparing it to the sound of millions of bees.
Players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are complaining, too.
“It is difficult for anyone on the field to concentrate.A lot of players don’t like them,”Ronaldo said.
“It is impossible to communicate;it’s like being deaf,”Messi said.
Fifa has come under pressure to take the vuvuzela out of world Cup games but has so far resisted. They say they must respect the culture of South Africa.
Freddie Maake,55,invented the vuvuzela in the 1960s.He said soccer fans should love sound of the horn as it is part of the unique experience of South Arican soccer.
“Learn to love the vuvuzela,so you can feel part of what life here is about,”he said.
