This is an excellent book, when I opened this book I was taken into a dark place. This book uses a lot of adjectives; the text is very beautiful and uses many beautiful metaphors. These metaphors create a dark world, a little bit of sadness constantly accumulates, finally ending in much sadness, and this enhances the story. The theme the author emphasizes is a thirst for wealth. As the Chinese economy develops quickly, more and more social problems appear. People pay more and more attention to money; they even lose themselves in it. This makes the Chinese teenagers more introspective and confused. The author wants to use this sad story to let other people know why teenagers feel sad. These characters seem real and believable. I can relate to their predicaments. The heroine, Yi Yao, is unhappy. She only has her mom and Qi Ming. Yi Yao's mom always beats her, and Qi Ming, only a teenager, cannot take her away from the situation.
