你的句子要是全用句子来表述，可以写成：

用分词短语来写，前面的 as they省去，谓语 heard 改用现在分词 hearing，这就是为什么 hear 要加 ing，句子变成：

非谓语，可以表达出和从句的效果，hearing可以改写成when They heard。
