I think it is important. Lots of things need to done with money, although its merits can only be guaranteed under the credit of government. Just considering there are so many children in close or remote place having no access to education, you will understand the importance of money. Or in other words, the importance of knowledge and skills to make money.
I am a grown-up now, but I have only read limited books. One of them influenced me a lot (I read more than 5 times) is related with macroeconomics, written by Sachs. In its last several chapters, it talks about hyperinflation of poor countries, where childern are living under dangers and losing opportunities to have what they should have, like nutrition and education. These two things will affect their long term growth. If they fail to have so important inputs now, how can they bring out highly valued outputs when they grow up? They need urgent help.
You may argue that lots of enterpreneurs (can be called "the salt of society") with little or without formal education make big money now. Yes, I admit you have got powerful examples to argue for your position. But generally, from a norm distribution, people with good education comprise the majority of up and middle class, while people without being properly educated left in bottom. Although we can't define which kind of people are happier, I personally think it is better to be close to nature and world. To know more about the nature and world needs some preconditions, for example, you'd better have a computer from which you can access the latest information happening in the world. You may argue why it is better to know more about outside world, I personally think we live in this world and we are connected in thousands of ways, economically or psychologically, thus it feels sweeter if we put ourselves in a pool of beautiful connections. I am willing to be happy for your happiness and sad for your sorrows. If these can become human nature, how good the life can be!!
Coming back to where I talk about the life of childern in poor countries and areas, I do want to prey for them. They should enjoy a happy childhood, without being hurt by hunger and wars. They should have the chance to sit in bright classroom, with a charming teacher to share with them how to obtain nutrition and energe from books and life. They should not worry they may find mum or dad dies in war some day when they open their eyes. They should not walk forth and back in street without a place to live and sleep.
I don't know how rich I can be, but I do hope and extremely willing to help them.

Well, money is really very important. But it is not the most important thing. I know that feeling, you know, when you are penniless。However when you lose love ,you will feel hopeless

Of course you can buy things with money, but you never buy happiness, honor, achievement and so on.
Even you can't buy a girlfriend. With love around us, we can work hard to earn what we want. With love around us, we can feel peace and happy. All these things can't be bought by money.
