the way引导的不一定全是定语从句，但用的比较多的是定语从句。

1、the way 是先行词, 其后是定语从句.它有三种表达形式:
1) the way+that
2)the way+ in which
3)the way + 从句(省略了that或in which),在通常情况下, 用in which 引导的定语从句最为正式,用that的次之,而省略了关系代词that 或 in which 的, 反而显得更自然,最为常用.如下面三句话所示,其意义相同.
I like the way in which he talks.（我喜欢他说话的方式。）
I like the way that he talks.（我喜欢他说话的方式。）
I like the way he talks.（我喜欢他说话的方式。）

2、the way用作为副词的对格,"the way+从句"实际上相当于一个状语从句来修饰全句.
the way=as
He did not do it the way his friend did.
他没有象他朋友那样去做此事.

3、the way+从句"还常用作主语,宾语,表语,或宾语补足语
I hate the way she stared at me .
我讨厌她盯我看的样子.
(the way=the manner in which在句中作宾语)

4、"the way+从句"也常作为状语,相当与"in any way(that or in which)+从句或in any manner in which +从句", 其含义是"不管/不论用什么方式".

我感觉网上有些介绍太复杂了，简单说一下狗哥的理解哈。
第一种情况：the way作为被定语从句修饰的先行词
重点是：作为先行词的the way是经常要在主句中充当一定的成分的。
This is the way (that) he did it.   

这就是他做这件事的方式。 （the way 在主句中充当宾语）
The way (in which,that) these comrades look at problems is wrong.
这些同志看问题的方法不对。（the way在主句中充当主语） 
第二种情况：把the way看成是一个引导方式状语的连词

重点是：作为连词的the way无论在主句还是方式从句中都是不充当任何成分的。

I will do the work the way my father did.

我将像我父亲那样做这项工作。 （the way就是一个赤果果的连词而已）
主句 I will do the work
从句 my father do the work
不要考虑什么the way前面省略了in之类的，就把the way看成是一个相当于as的连词就哦了。

严格的来说,the way不能用作任何从句,因为way是一个名词,只有连词才能引导从句,只是从形式上把the way之后的连词省列后,the way看起来成了连词.
　　这两个句子the way 之后接的都是定语从句.请看补充好的句子：
　　I was never allowed to do things (in) the way in which I wanted (to do things).（介词之后的which不能换成that,which也不能省略）
　　或：I was never allowed to do things (in) the way that/which I wanted (to do things in).
　　that /which在定语从句中作宾语,可以省列.
　　He was looking at her in a way that surprised her.该句中that 引出的是定语从句.that做主语.
　　way作“方法”解释时,前面的介词In很多时候都可以省列.
　　请看这两个句子：
　　Every time I saw him,I want to beat him.
　　She fell in love with him the moment she saw him.
　　在上面两句中的every time,the moment 和the way 是一样的,都是名词
