Why do we work? No matter how we feel about work, our primary motivation to work is to earn a living. Yes , every week ,every two weeks, or every month we get our pay. For some , work merely ensures survival, for some, they regard work as a way of getting material goods far beyond what is necessary for survival. Otherwise what a person does helps to determine that person’s prestige. I do think that people need work, people should work and people must work. First, except for the payment we get from work, we can get other benefits from it. Such as insurances, medical care, and vacations with pay, etc. Second , that we can have an identity from it. For example we can be thought of as teachers, doctors, lawyers or engineers, etc. we can feel that we are doing something that is useful, and find intellectual stimulation and personal gratification in our work. So we can see work is important to us because it gives us a social place. Without work we will feel useless and will become useless by doing nothing. Please remember that we can’t eat for 8 hours a day nor drink for 8 hours a day, all we can do for 8 hours is work. Work won’t betray you forever. Work will lead you to the success which we call self-actualization if you are lucky enough.

energy shortage is a very serious problem in the world. many people worry that energy resources on the earth will be exhausted if we use them in an unchecked way. this, most people agree, will cause serious problems and even crisis and jeopardize the survival of mankind .
on the one hand, most people agree that the problem can be solved in one way or another. one is to conserve and save our energy. energy refers not only to coal, oil, or natural gases but also to goods, land and water, etc. most countries have realized the wastefulness in their using of energy. they are trying to conserve energy. for example, some countries have a daylight saving system to use less electricity for lighting. some cities have enforced water savers at public such as restrooms and bars. some have enforced serious penalties on overuse of electricity, water, and farming land. by these means, people hope the drain on energy resources could be slowed down.
however, conservation alone cannot solve the problem. another way, perhaps the best i think,, is to develop new energy resources. obviously, no matter how hard we try to save energy resources and how abundant they are, we will use them up sooner or later. i think there are many energy resources that we can develop and utilize. we don’t have to depend only on the current conventional energy resources. there are many other energy resources that we can develop such as nuclear power, waterpower and solar power. these resources, if developed, can completely replace the conventional energy and thus solve the problem of energy shortage.
Today, I’ll make a speech about the purpose of work. I think all of us will go to find a job in next maybe 5years, that’s something we must face in the future. But I suppose everybody has a question in his mind which is why should I work, and what do I work for? There are probably massive reasons for that, however I only want to claim that one of the most being neglected reasons for why people work is to help other people. To illustrate, like the charity workers, and religious organizations etc. all work for the general interest of all human being instead of only working for themselves. Their labor is to help others because they want to make the society more stable and more harmonious by spreading the good moral convictions, thereby benefiting themselves and others.
You know, for some religious groups they own some of the most famous charity workers in the world. For example, a large number of foreigners living in the poor area of Africa as doctors, teachers, and other professionals who were taught by their religious organizations to help the poor, sick, and needy people there without any complaints. I guess these professionals could make much more money if they worked in the developed countries. However they desire to stay there and help the poor people because they believe that their religion has taught them to help everybody and love everybody, and therefore they feel a sense of achievement when they do their jobs.
Some people help others because they have been helped by somebody in their lives before. They may have been changed by a great teacher who helped them and inspired them to be successful. Therefore they would like to be a teacher as well. Likewise, their family member's life was saved by doctors and they even felt that they cannot express their appreciation completely by paying money, thus they become doctors to continue to save others to repay the society. For the people like these, the motivation for working is not just the paycheck at the end of the month, but probably the smile on a child's face when he reads his first book at school, or the look of joy on the new parents' faces when they see their healthy newborn baby.
Finally, there are also some people who work for others because they believe that the society is only safe and stable when all of its members are happy and satisfied. These people include the government officials who try to make good policies that benefit the poorer classes of society. They know that only by making policies that help poor people live richer, happier lives can they reduce the crime, sickness, and poverty rates, thereby making a more safer and happier society for all citizens.
All in all, I think all of us will find a job when we graduate. No matter what we do, we should try to do something good for the society, to help other people as much as we can. To make the world a more beautiful and better place to live in.
