Sailing around the world an adult,never mind a teenager.But 17-year-old Briton Mike Perham pulled it off.
Nine months after setting sail from the UK on November 15,2008,nine months of huge storms,boat problems and loneliness,he became the youngest person to sail around the world solo.
Mike is just three months younger than Zac Sunderland,the American who achieved the same goal.Zac started out from the US on June 14,2008.
Crossing the Earth in different directions,the two boys met in Cape Town in South Africa .Mike said they were not rivals.“No.It’s two teenagers going out there,.Living their dreams and having the adventure of a lifetime.”
Mike and Zac may be young,but they are no strangers to sailing.Mike and his father sailed separate boats across the Atlantic when he was 147,making him the youngest person to cross that ocean alone.That record encouraged him to take on an even bigger challenge.
On the recent trip,the scariest moment for Mike came when his boat was hit by storms in the southern Indian Ocean.“The waves were so high.It felt like I was going right over.Stuff was flying around and I just thought “Oh no!”” he said.At other times,he had to dive into the water to fix problems.Once he tied himself to the boat,jumped into the sea and cut a rope away with a knife.
Zac’s journey was also dangerous.Once some pirates chased him in the Indian Ocean.
Zac wants to write a book about his adventures to inspire young people.Mike has something to say too:“You’ve got to have confidence in yourself that you will make it.”
