Life without friends is dull and empty. Certainly, everybody needs his own friends. Friends can carry us through difficult times, can share our joy when we are happy. However, as everybody has different lifestyles and ambitions, the criteria for choosing friends are different.

I think the first criterion for choosing a friend is that he should have a kind heart. It represents a person's nature. We cannot imagine spending a lot of time with an ill-willed person, and what sort of danger it would bring. The other criterion for choosing friends is that we should have similar hobbies, interests, lifestyles, thoughts and speak the same language. Therefore we can have mutual understanding, live in harmony, and avoid a lot of arguement caused by conflicting ideas.
