我听了这些士人的议论感到好笑，我说：忠献公哪里只是羡慕白乐天啊，人家忠献公正想做一个普通人却得不到。老天生出这个人，将要让他担当天下重任，那么受冻的人找他求衣穿，挨饿的人找他要饭吃。凡是不能满足的都想要得到满足。如果有谁能够帮助他们，那他将穷于应付。因此他将一辈子处在辛勤劳苦之中，遭遇各种利害冲突。这难道是人所愿意做的吗？忠献公治理国家已经辅佐三个皇帝。晚年萌生告老还乡的强烈愿望，可是大家一起挽留他继续任职，他不能够放弃。在这个时候，他对白乐天有羡慕的感情，是不值得奇怪的。但是把白乐天平生行事和忠献公比较，人生收获的大小多少，那么后世的评论，相信一定会公允无欺。治理天下，平定叛乱，安抚国家，却不居功自傲。渴求贤才，拿爵禄赏赐天下贤才，而世人并不知道对他感恩。勇敢征战，安定六军。遥远边陲地域的人也仰慕他的风采，而国家安危系于一身。这些都是忠献公做到的，而白乐天没有做到。在自己身体强健时乞求告老还乡，退隐田园十五年，每天和朋友们饮酒赋诗，尽享山水田园乐趣。家里有穿不完的布帛，吃不完的粮食，歌舞作乐享受不尽。这些就是白乐天所拥有的，而忠献公享受不到这些。忠诚言论，美好计谋，为国家效劳，而且灿烂文采在后代显露；处境困穷，不改变操守，道德人品比古人还高，这些方面忠献公和白乐天都是一样的拥有。忠献公既不因为自己所拥有的而自夸，也不因为自己所缺少的而自卑。只是将寄托情趣在与白乐天相同的爱好中。当他在一醉之中寄托自己的情怀，看淡得失，忘记祸福，混淆贵贱，等同贤愚，等同世间万物。完全融入自然之中，不仅仅是和白乐天相比较。古代君子对自己要求繁多，对个人身名要求低廉。因此他们实际才能超过名声，因而世人对他们盛赞不厌。圣人如孔子，却把自己比为左丘明，自认为不如学生颜渊。后世君子，他们的实际才能不能达到，可是都有奢求名声的愿望。扬雄自比为孟轲，崔浩自比为张良，然而后世人始终不赞同他们。由此看来，忠献公之贤能比他们要高出很多。
过去忠献公曾对他儿子忠彦说，想求我为醉白堂写一篇记没有实现。死后，忠彦告诉我，我认为自己义不容辞，于是流着泪写了这篇记。
