Yang was born in 1922 in Hefei, Anhui, China, his father Yang Ko-Chuen (traditional Chinese: 杨武之; pinyin: Yáng Wǔzhī) (1896-1973) was a mathematician and his mother Luó Mènghuà (罗孟华) was a housewife.
