Compression molding
In this process, premeasured volume of powder, or a preformed part, is placed directly in a heated mold cavity and is formed by pressure with a punch or the other half of the mold. Compression molding is thus similar to a forging operation with the same problem of flash formation and the need for its removal.
This process is used mainly for thermosets, with the original material in a partially polymerized state. Cross-linking is then completed in the heated mold under pressure and with curing times ranging from 0.5 to 5 minutes, depending on the material, part geometry and its thickness-the greater the thickness, the longer the curing time.
Because of their relative simplicity, mold costs in compression molding are generally lower than in injection molding. Three types of compression molds are available: flash, positive, and semi-positive, as shown in Fig. Typical parts made by this process are knobs, handles, fittings, and housings. Fiber-reinforced materials may also be formed by compression molding.
