the South 就是指美国南部,在美国飞出农奴制之前,美国南部蓄奴现象极其普遍,主要是因为南方主要经济支柱是农业,一些棉花种植园需要大量的劳动力为农奴制提供了客观条件。part with是分开的意思。cannot afford to是不能的意思。这句话就是说南方不能没有奴隶。
