Remember the early days of the internet?The squawky dial-up connections?Discovering the wonder of email and instant messaging?The early online games?Silly email attachments that made you jump out of your skin when a monster suddenly screeched at you from your screen?Yes,the internet was certainly a novelty.But my how times have changed and I doubt that many people could have seen that the internet would become such an integral part of our society.You can now do your weekly grocery shop or even book a vacation without ever leaving the comfort of your own home.Telecommuting has changed the way that many people work.Information that you would previously have had to visit a library to find can now be accessed with only a few clicks of your mouse.You can stream movies from the internet.Blogs have become an increasingly important source of news and enable us to read a diverse range of opinions from a myriad of commentators,rather than those of a single newspaper or reporter.Similarly,hyperlocal or microlocal blogs – which are blogs dedicated to a specific town or area – have become valuable community resources,especially in small towns which may not have their own local newspaper or radio station.World events now play out in real-time and people can instantly achieve fame or infamy .Social media is being used in completely unexpected ways – people stranded due to the recent disruptions caused by the Icelandic volcano used the Twitter #getmehome and #putmeup hashtags to find help.And even political parties and corporations are monitoring social media to predict trend.Yes,the internet has certainly had an impact that’s far beyond what most people would have predicted when they first started forwarding jokes to their friends via email:it’s become a critical social,commercial and political tool.
