Study area:Monroe County,IndianaThe study area for this research is Monroe County,Indiana.As illustrated in Fig.1,Monroe County isin the Midwestern United States and is approximately50 miles south of Indianapolis.Although urbanizationhas been occurring within the county,a wide range ofland uses and land covers coexist.Land use policieshave the potential to direct urban growth in such away that impacts to natural ecosystem function andculturally important landscapes are or will be limited.The landscape of Monroe County is composed ofa mosaic of land uses and land covers.In contrast tothe glacially impacted northern portion of the state,southern Indiana,including much of Monroe County,is composed of hilly terrain with relatively thin,poor-quality soils.Agricultural areas within MonroeCounty tend to be small farms that have been in familiesfor generations and farms cultivated as a hobby.Because of the hills and steep topography,many areasof the county are not suited for modern agriculturalC.Croissant / Agriculture,Ecosystems and Environment 101 (2004) 219–232 221Fig.1.Location of the study area,Monroe County,within theUnited States of America and the State of Indiana.use.Many of these areas have been purchased by stateor federal forest agencies.Secondary forests haveregrown on much of both the private and publiclyowned lands and forest (mostly secondary succession)is a dominant land cover (Evans et al.,2001).The city of Bloomington is a regional economic,cultural,and governmental center of Monroe Countyand is located approximately in the middle of thecounty.Bloomington is somewhat unique in the regionof southern Indiana in that it is experiencing urbangrowth.As the population of the county has grownand fewer residents pursue farming occupations,therehas been less of a need for large landholdings.Manyareas that were formerly in agriculture have beensubdivided and have been developed for urban or suburbanuses.This has resulted in a number of relativelysmall parcels.These parcels are particularly locatednear the city of Bloomington and the town of Ellettsville,which is seven miles west of Bloomingtonand is the only other sizeable town in the county.
