In the first summer of my college years ,I was determined to find a job I could enjoy . And I was very fortunate in being able to work for a TV and radio company called Keith Fordyce . I worked in the company'saircraft museum during the day and was employed as a barman in the restaurant in the evenings .
My first few days as a barman were a bit of a nightmare . It really was not so easy as it looked .
The very first customers I tried to serve were a retired general and his wife . He ordered his drink first .
Unfortunately ,I could not understand waht he said .There times he shouted the name of the drink before hia wife explained slowly and clearly what it was he wanted .
"A Courvoisier ,young man -- it's a cognac . There ,behind you . "
My face turned the same color as the brandy ,but managed to serve it in the right glass .
"And a gin and tonic for my wife ! " he shouted .
I found the gin but the tonic was beyind me .
"Use the syphon ! " he shouted ,pointing at the strange-looking bottle on the bar .
I took it and ,as many a novice has done ,Iput the handle into the glass and started pressing the nozzle . Nothing happened .
Immediately ,I reversed the position and a powerful jet of tonic water squirted into the glass . A mixture of gin and tonic zoomed out of the glass ,missing the general by inches ,but hitting hia wife between the eyes .
