Qualities or Traits approach (10 marks)
Some managers can influence people to work because of their personal
qualities
Physical characteristics– looks, appearance, grooming, dressing
Social characteristics – communication, ability to get along with
others
Personality – perseverance, determination, daring, toughness
Intelligence characteristics – ability to understand and assess issues,
make decisions, solve problems
Work related characteristics –attitude towards work, ambition
Student is to provide an example of this approach (5 marks)
Behavioral approach (10 marks)
1) Task-oriented style
manager monitors subordinates closely to ensure their tasks are completed and up to standards
2) Employee-oriented
manager tries to motivate rather than control subordinates. Encourages participation in decision-making, develops friendly and trusting relationships
Student is to provide an example of this approach (5 marks)
3. Leader’s power position
– The higher up the corporate hierarchy, the more power the leader has, and thus the more influence he can exercise.
