The moment we’ve all been waiting for– the time when the baby boomer generation finally gets to retire has arrived at long last. However, it hasn’t be an easy road for boomers as we have seen the erosion of personal retirement savings due to the volatility of the stock market; and, some of the youngest members of the baby boomer generation have found that they were laid off just shy of the finish line and a full pension. Is there anything that can be done to salvage the situation or are we doomed to a troubled retirement? The answer is, of course, that there is.

Nearing, or Even Past, Retirement but Not Out Yet!

For the baby boomer generation, more so than for most others, the idea of simply being put out to pasture and not having to do anything is simply anathema. How can we simply sit around getting old when we were the movers and shakers who changed the world? On the other hand, just because we want to be able to do something to stay productive doesn’t mean it’s always easy.

Especially in this economy, with companies downsizing left, right, and center, boomers are a prime target for cutbacks since we are near or even past retirement age; and, we are, after all, the most expensive workers in a business, both from the point of view of seniority salary and from a point of view of healthcare costs. Therefore, boomers who find themselves needing help in retirement need to look elsewhere for ways to add to their nest eggs.

The Baby Boomer Generation is Known for Being Creative

If there is anything that this generation is known for, it is for being creative and actually coming up with new ideas and new ways to do things. It was the boomer generation that finally got out of Vietnam; it was the boomer generation that made cellphones ubiquitous; and, it is the baby boomer generation that will persevere and do great things, even in retirement.
