We live in a marvelous age, one where technological advancements have made it relatively easy to produce a film in which computer-generated guinea pigs interact seamlessly with flesh-and-blood humans. What's extraordinary is that a film can have all that and still be boring. Eighty years ago, people were delighted just to see movies talk. In 2009, you can watch animated rodents save the world and still think, " What else you got?"

To some extent, the genericness may be intentional; it's kind of amusing to see action-movie cliches reenacted by guinea pigs. But once the novelty wears off it's just a spy caper with a few laughs and some mild adventure -- enough to divert the kids, probably, but nothing special. And now I'm forced to contemplate what it says about the world when flawlessly executed special effects that bring cartoon rodents to life inspire nothing more than a ho-hum.

Mission: Impossible’ and ‘Short Circuit’ meet ‘Babe’ in this passable CGI-enhanced live-action kiddie diversion which takes suspension of disbelief to new levels by way of an assemblage of talking, crime-fighting guinea pigs.The padded-out story essentially revolves around malevolent entrepreneur Bill Nighy’s clichéd plan to rule the world by having questionable military-grade microchips installed in his company’s widely-distributed domestic appliances. When Zach Galifianakis’s Dr Dolittle-like miltary boffin smells a rat, he sends in twitchy-nosed rodent Darwin and his cute, well-equipped brethren to carry out a spot of against-the-clock espionage. Hollywood’s current sheep-like insistence on releasing most kids’ films in 3D continues unabated with this sprog-friendly Jerry Bruckheimer chase-fest. Rugrats will probably think differently, but I for one have had enough of watching fuzzy footage through stupid glasses. Though the film as a whole delivers ample thrills, it does lag occasionally and is encumbered by bland voiceovers and a lack of laughs
