Last week, like many other teenagers across the country, Maire New returned to school. She reunited with the 31 she missed over the summer, saw familiar teachers and turned to homework in the evenings.
But for New, school is anything but typical. Her classes begin in the early morning and do not end until dinnertime. Many of her friends, who are from Russia, Europe and Asia, don’t speak 32 . New is a full-time student at the Bolshoi Ballet academy in Moscow and among the few Americans at the school, the first 33 from Alaska.
New grew up Scottish Highland dancing and began ballet at the 34 age of 12 at a teacher’s suggestion. Though New hadn’t started earlier, she 35 quickly and, in 2011, attended the Joffrey Ballet’s summer intensive. New did her own research 36 , watching videos of 37 dancers Natalia Osipova and Svetlana Zakharoval on You Tube. She was 38 . “If you watch either of them, there’s so much emotion and soul in their 39 ”, she said. “Every 40 has a purpose. That’s what I hope to put into my dance, too.”
In 2012, she attended the Bolshoi Ballet academy six-week intensive in New York, 41 in partnership with the Russian American Foundation. She returned the following year, when she was also 42 for a scholarship to study Russian culture and ballet abroad at the Bolshoi for another six 43 . “The goal is to break down stereotypes (模式化的思想) between 44 ,” New said. “But on top of that, we had this incredible opportunity.” Those six weeks 45 a kind of preparation, and she was asked to return to the 46 as a full-time student.
“I’ve had people come up and say to me, ‘If I was your father, I wouldn’t let you go,’” New said. “Of course, it’s a place of 47 disagreement, but you can’t let political issues get in the way of your 48 .” She mentioned a famous photo of the Bolshoi performing during World War II. “There are horrible things happening in the world, but when it comes to 49 and ballet, we’re here to make the world a better place.
